How Perplexity Works

Perplexity is not your grandfather's search engine. Perplexity is an "answer engine." It brings together real-time web search and large language models (LLMs) to provide conversational, cited answers.

There are several steps in the process.

Query Understanding: search will be processed by LLMs, which understand the semantics of your intent, and not just the keywords.

Retrieval: Perplexity searches its index (which it built with its own PerplexityBot web crawler plus some integrations to the Bing and/or Google APIs) in search of documents that are useful. Perplexity genuinely focuses on the documents that are useful and high quality and not simply found on the web, unlike Google which will index the entire web.

Snippet Extraction and RAG: Perplexity pulls the relevant documents and paragraphs by using an embedding technique and LLMs. This is RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) taken to an extreme; the model is pulling fresh context and thus not relying on the data in the confines of the model.

Refinement: Perplexity strives to be as factually accurate as possible and bases its answers on the documents that it pulls. It also learns from user input and employs RLHF in order to develop.

The key difference from Google: Perplexity will, on average, cite 4-6 sources per answer and usually pulls from your site, related reviews, YouTube, and Reddit. It also cites more recent and relevant sources.

Citation Factors: Why Your Content gets Selected

Perplexity's so-called "rankings" actually refer to citation probability. There are no classic positions. Instead, it aims first to validate strong, helpful answers and supports its selections as much as possible. These factors generally hold:

Trustworthiness: Strong E-E-A-T Quotations from experts and cited case studies & third-party trusted site mentions. Boosts to the domain (e.g. manual trust boosts) and topic subcategory preference (e.g., tech/science boosts) contribute.

Multiple Format Cross-Platform: YouTube videos, reviews (G2, Yelp), Reddit discussions, and lists on authority sites/backlinking help.

Engagement (Content Signals): Good early site metrics, no negative signals (low quality/duplicate content).

Performance covers ~60% of the study results for top Google results, but sources that excel in structure and depth will also succeed.
